Saudi Arabia has warned Iran for the first time that it will be forced to retaliate if the kingdom or its energy facilities are targeted, according to sources cited by Reuters.
The message was conveyed as Riyadh reiterated that it supports a diplomatic solution to the dispute between Tehran and the United States, but would respond if attacks on the kingdom continue.
Sources said the warning was issued before Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian apologised to Gulf neighbours on Saturday for Iran’s actions in an apparent attempt to ease tensions following recent attacks.
Two days earlier, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud spoke with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and clarified Riyadh’s position.
According to sources, the Saudi minister said the kingdom supports mediation efforts or negotiations that could reduce tensions and resolve the dispute.
He also stated that neither Saudi Arabia nor other Gulf countries had allowed their airspace or land to be used for US air strikes.
However, the minister warned that if Iranian attacks on Saudi territory or key energy infrastructure continue, Riyadh could allow US forces to use its military bases and would respond to any strikes on its energy targets.
Diplomatic contacts between Riyadh and Tehran have continued since the start of the US and Israeli campaign, with Saudi Arabia maintaining communication through its ambassador in Tehran.
Neither the Saudi nor Iranian foreign ministries immediately responded to Reuters’ requests for comment.
