Nature reminds us who’s boss

Modern people have so many amazing opportunities that sometimes it feels like they’re their own boss and capable of almost anything! At such moments, the weather often comes into play with all its natural phenomena. After all, what better way to remind us who’s really in charge than a sudden snowstorm, downpour, wind, and a thick layer of ice? And that’s far from all the weather has in its arsenal!

On the morning
of April 11, 2023, the village of Klyuchi in Kamchatka was covered in a layer of ash, covering streets, houses, cars, and trees. The village was plunged into darkness, surrounded by the smell of sulfur and gas, and a roaring sound.
Local residents’ reactions varied: some wrote on social media about feeling eerie, while others joked about having been to the moon or experiencing an apocalypse that began in Kamchatka. This year, the Krasheninnikov volcano, which erupted almost 500 years ago, awoke in Kamchatka.
Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano in Indonesia erupted with an ash column over 10 kilometers high.
Fagradalsfjall volcano, dormant for over 6,000 years, awoke on March 19, 2021! Then it erupted until September and then died down again… And then in 2023, it reawakened again, this time with a large amount of magma accumulating beneath the town of Grindavik, and lava flows could break through to the surface at any moment.
The eruption continues in 2024.
In Grindavik and the surrounding area, seismic activity has already caused large cracks in roads and golf courses.
And Italy’s Mount Etna is still erupting.
In Greece, the Santorini volcano , which once destroyed the Minoan civilization, has reawakened
. The most powerful volcanic eruption in the last seven years occurred in Japan. Mount Shimmoe, located on the border of Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures, produced a powerful ash plume reaching a height of over five kilometers, Zakon.kz reports.
Mudflows
. Loud noises in the mountains do not bode well. Usually, the stone giants that stretch to the sky remain silent, with only the echo of birdsong echoing.
But if you’re in the mountains and suddenly hear a rumble and grinding sound that carries for many meters, seek higher ground and stay away from banks and riverbeds.
This sound is a harbinger of great danger: a mudflow.
In the Indian state of Uttarakhand, a mudflow destroyed an entire village in minutes.
A mudflow blocked the road to Lake Ritsa in Abkhazia.
A landslide in Sochi, Russia, is poised to destroy two more apartment buildings.
It previously destroyed a cottage community.
230 landslides were recorded in Sochi after heavy rains in 2022.
A landslide completely destroyed the Shovi resort in Georgia in 2025.
Heavy rain caused a powerful landslide in a popular tourist area of Phuket in September of this year.
Early in the morning, a huge mass of earth suddenly rushed down a slope directly onto residential buildings, sweeping away everything in its path. This resulted in serious damage to several buildings and loss of life.
Around the same time, in Dagestan (southern Russia), heavy rains destroyed a bridge over the Ulluchai River.
Mudflows are not caused solely by heavy rainfall. This could be snowmelt, earthquakes, glacial lake outbursts, or, in areas of volcanic activity, the trigger is the sudden melting of a glacier under the influence of volcanic heat or an eruption. A deadly torrent of rocks, mud, and mineral deposits quickly and mercilessly destroys everything in its path. Well, that’s just a small part of nature’s nature.
Well, of course, nature doesn’t forbid us from making plans. But it’s still best to check the forecast!
