Wadi Rum, a Martian desert on Earth

The Wadi Rum desert is unlike any other—instead of an endless stretch of sand dunes that stretches to the horizon, it’s covered in mountains. Over several millennia, wind and sun have shaped this stunning landscape, with arches, canyons, and deep wells. The history of this place is rich in folklore: the famous “Lawrence of Arabia” was filmed here, and during World War I, rebels often hid here from the authorities.

The few local cliffs reach a hefty 1,700 meters, and only experienced climbers dare to conquer them. As you can imagine, the desert offers no routes for beginners.

The rock massifs are cut through by canyons, the walls of which are decorated with rock paintings. Around 4,000 years ago, prehistoric people inhabited these areas.

Wadi Rum’s second name is the Valley of the Moon. The local landscapes, with their dry, desolate beauty, truly resemble the moon.
