Putin Announces Plans for Kyrgyzstan’s First Nuclear Power Plant During State Visit to Bishkek

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Wednesday that Moscow is exploring the possibility of building Kyrgyzstan’s first-ever nuclear power plant, using advanced small modular reactor technology. Speaking alongside Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov in Bishkek, Putin emphasized that the proposed project would rely on Russian technology that meets “the most stringent safety and environmental protection requirements.”
Putin noted that Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, is already implementing a large-scale reclamation program for former uranium mining sites in Kyrgyzstan. In addition to the nuclear project, he revealed plans to construct a large solar power plant in the Issyk-Kul region in eastern Kyrgyzstan, as well as a new modern combined heat and power plant in the northern part of the country.
