EU’s Kaja Kallas Warns of ‘Broad Assault’ on International Legal Order, Urges Stronger Backing for ICC

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, has called for renewed global commitment to international law and stronger support for the International Criminal Court (ICC), warning that the world is facing “a broad assault” on the international legal order.

Speaking at the College of Europe in Bruges, Kallas said that while international law “is not perfect and does not solve all problems, without it, we would sink into anarchy.”

Kallas reaffirmed the EU’s “long and robust policy of support” for the ICC and criticized Hungary’s decision to withdraw from the court, emphasizing that all EU members remain legally bound by collective decisions supporting it. She urged young people to actively defend international law and the ICC, calling for creativity and innovation in upholding justice worldwide.
