Russia to Reduce Poland’s Diplomatic Presence After Closure of Gdansk Consulate

Russia announced on Wednesday that it will reduce Poland’s diplomatic and consular presence in retaliation for Warsaw’s decision to shut the Russian Consulate General in Gdansk. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told the state-run Tass news agency, “As a reciprocal measure, the Russian side will reduce Poland’s diplomatic and consular presence in Russia.”

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski had earlier confirmed the closure of the Gdansk consulate, which was the last operating Russian consulate in Poland. This follows previous shutdowns of Russian consulates in Poznan and Krakow in late 2024 and mid-2025, which Poland attributed to alleged acts of sabotage orchestrated by Moscow. Russia had responded at the time by closing Poland’s consulates in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad.

Currently, Poland maintains one consulate general in Irkutsk, in addition to its embassy and consular section in Moscow. Prior to the Gdansk closure, Russia had an embassy in Warsaw and a consulate in Gdansk, marking a further deterioration in bilateral diplomatic relations.
