EU Says US Actions in Venezuela Create “Opportunity for Democratic Transition” – AL24 News

The European Union on Monday described recent US military action in Venezuela as creating an “opportunity for a democratic transition led by the Venezuelan people,” while emphasizing the importance of respecting international law and avoiding further escalation.
Speaking at a European Commission press briefing, spokesperson stated that President Nicolas Maduro “lacks the legitimacy of a democratically elected leader” and reiterated that the EU continues to advocate for a “peaceful, Venezuelan-led transition to democracy.” She stressed that all actors should exercise restraint and avoid actions that could worsen the crisis, noting that members of the UN Security Council have a “particular responsibility” to uphold international law as a cornerstone of global security.
Another Commission spokesperson, Paula Pinho, echoed this position, saying the weekend’s developments “provide an opportunity for a democratic transition led by the Venezuelan people.”
The comments came following US military operations in Venezuela announced by President Donald Trump on Saturday, which resulted in the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Both were flown to New York and are being held at a Brooklyn detention center, facing federal charges related to drug trafficking and alleged cooperation with groups designated as terrorist organizations. Maduro has denied the accusations, and Venezuelan officials have called for the couple’s release.
