Roman Ivanov, a medical expert at the Hemotest laboratory, spoke about the consequences of manganese deficiency in the body.

“Manganese is necessary for the normal functioning of enzymes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids and cholesterol, it also protects cells from destruction by free radicals, plays an important role in the synthesis of proteins and the conversion of food into energy, participates in the mineralization of bone tissue and the synthesis of collagen, helps strengthen bones and maintain joint mobility,” the expert said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.

According to the specialist, this microelement regulates the transmission of nerve impulses and the synthesis of neurotransmitters, and affects mood and cognitive functions.

“For adult men and women, the recommended daily intake of manganese is approximately 2.5–5 mg,” Ivanov noted.

The main sources of manganese are cereals, nuts, legumes, green leafy vegetables, and tea, the doctor added.
