Therapist Agayeva: pneumonia is most dangerous for people over 65 years old

The most effective method of preventing pneumonia for people at high risk of developing this disease is vaccination against pneumococcal infections and the influenza virus, Anastasia Agayeva, a therapist at the medical company SberZdorovye, said in an interview with RT.

“Pneumonia is a group of inflammatory diseases of the lung tissue of an infectious nature, both bacterial, viral, and fungal, in which there is a disruption of the respiratory system, fever, cough, and shortness of breath,” the expert recalled.

Pneumonia is most dangerous for people at high risk of developing pneumococcal infections.

“These include: persons over 65 years of age, patients with chronic lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, persons with chronic heart diseases – coronary heart disease, chronic heart failure, cardiomyopathy, people with diabetes, immunodeficiency conditions – HIV -infected people who have a malignant neoplasm and are receiving immunosuppressive therapy,” the doctor explained.

According to the therapist, the most effective method of preventing pneumonia for people at high risk of developing pneumonia is vaccination against pneumococcal infections and the influenza virus.

She also advised to avoid crowds of people during the period of increased incidence of ARVI, consult a doctor at the first signs of the disease, and observe a work and rest schedule.

It was previously reported that a trend towards an increase in the incidence of community-acquired pneumonia is observed in Russia.
