Doctor Mikhailova: good sleep prevents the release of stress hormones
Adequate sleep prevents the release of stress hormones that interfere with the formation of collagen in the skin, and it is responsible for its firmness and elasticity, Natalya Mikhailova, candidate of medical sciences, dermatovenerologist, said in an interview with RT.
“During sleep, blood flow to the skin increases, so a well-rested person has a radiant complexion and does not have dark circles under the eyes,” the expert noted.
According to her, ideally an adult should sleep six to eight hours.
“Sleep of nine hours or more is no longer good for health, it causes headaches and endocrine system disorders,” explained the scientific director of Martinex.
You need to go to bed before midnight, the best time to go to bed is from 22:00 to 23:00, the doctor advised.
“This is due to the fact that melatonin production peaks at two o’clock in the morning. At night there is 30 times more of this hormone in the blood serum than during the day. Melatonin is an active antioxidant that regulates the functioning of brain cells, protects DNA from damage, and is actively involved in the functioning of the thyroid gland,” the specialist added.
She emphasized that lack of sleep reduces a person’s performance, worsens mood, leads to the development of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
“A person who sleeps little has decreased sensitivity to insulin and impaired glucose metabolism, which leads to diabetes mellitus. Excess weight gain is also associated with chronic lack of sleep. Appetite is disrupted, hunger increases, a person who does not sleep at night reaches for the refrigerator,” Mikhailova concluded.
Earlier, Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, Candidate of Medical Sciences, expert at the Hemotest laboratory, told RT in a conversation what causes insomnia and what to do to feel alert.
