Doctor Myasnikov: the era of antibiotics is coming to an end
Honored Doctor of Russia, TV presenter Alexander Myasnikov, expressed the opinion that the era of antibiotics is coming to an end.
“The problem is not only that existing antibiotics are losing their effectiveness. “Superbugs” have appeared – new strains that are resistant to many types of antibiotics from the very beginning,” he said in an interview with the Public News Service.
People have natural immunity, he said, and it's a powerful force.
“We have lived for thousands of years without antibiotics, and the human body knows how to cope with infections. It is important to remember that antibiotics were not a panacea for all diseases,” he added.
In turn, molecular biologist, Doctor of Biological Sciences, professor, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN), head of the laboratory of bionanotechnology, microbiology and virology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Novosibirsk State University Sergei Netosov, in a conversation with the online publication “Moscow Region Today,” recalled that antibiotics do not help with viral infections.
As the expert noted, the use of antibiotics to combat bacterial infections should be as prescribed by a doctor, and uncontrolled consumption of such drugs leads to the selection of strains resistant to these drugs.
“Scientists have been puzzled by this for a long time. In recent years, they have been working on the development of so-called antibacterial viruses. These viruses are called bacteriophages,” Netosov concluded.
