JCEM: Two to three cups of coffee a day protect against diabetes and heart disease
Scientists from Soochow University in China have found that drinking two to three cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of cardiometabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and stroke. The results of the study were published in the scientific journal Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).
Scientists analyzed the dietary habits and health characteristics of 172,300 participants, whose data was provided by the UK Biobank (a large repository of biological samples). They found that small doses of caffeine can significantly reduce the risk of cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CM). This phrase refers to the simultaneous presence of two or more chronic diseases associated with metabolism and the cardiovascular system.
The group of cardiometabolic diseases includes diabetes, coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke. According to scientists, two to three standard cups of coffee contain the amount of caffeine necessary to prevent such pathologies. Participants who consumed coffee in the specified doses daily had a 48.1% lower probability of developing cardiometabolic multimorbidity compared to those who did not drink coffee at all.
