Daily Mail: Hot water bottles older than two years old may rupture and cause burns

A rubber hot water bottle exploded on a British woman's lap, causing severe burns. Experts do not recommend using heating pads older than two years, reports the Daily Mail.

A 27-year-old woman from Manchester regularly used a hot water bottle to ease period pain. In July 2024, she filled it with hot water from a kettle and lay down on the sofa. A few minutes later, the heating pad exploded, and water fell on the woman’s legs, lower abdomen and arms. A cold shower, which the woman took for 30 minutes, did not help get rid of the pain due to the burn.

For two weeks, the woman came to the hospital every day for bandaging. She may be left with extensive scarring for life.

Experts recommend replacing rubber heating pads every two years to prevent them from breaking. You can only fill them halfway with hot water.
