DTU: Developed synthetic fibers that lift 200 times their weight

A team of scientists from the Danish Technological University (DTU) has created artificial muscles to help weakened people. This was reported on the official website of the scientific institution.

Synthetic fibers consist of silicone elastomers formed into a hollow sewing thread. This shape allows them to be sewn into regular clothes. The channel in the center of the fiber is filled with a conductive liquid. When an electric current passes through it, the muscle contracts.

According to the authors of the development, such a thread can lift a weight 200 times its own.

“We see the final solution as a 'support suit', primarily aimed at older adults who, with added strength, will be better able to perform household chores and will need less help around the house.

But we also see that this solution will be able to attract more women to jobs that require physical labor,” the scientists noted.

Researchers intend to create special clothing with built-in muscle fibers. They will be powered by energy from a portable source and activated by raising your arms.

At the initial stage, such equipment should enable a person to lift an additional five kilograms.
