Vice-Rector Akasov spoke about the award of the Nobel Prize in Physics and Chemistry
Vice-Rector for Science and Innovation of the Russian Chemical Technical University named after. DI. Mendleyev Roman Akasov commented on the award of the Nobel Prize in Physics and Chemistry.
“It is symbolic that yesterday the prize was awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for creating the foundations of neural networks and machine learning, and today to David Baker (University of Washington), Demis Hassabis and John Jumper (Google DeepMind) for the use of neural networks and artificial intelligence to solve problems related to predicting the three-dimensional structure of proteins,” the expert said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.
According to Akasov, the programs developed by the laureates will significantly improve the accuracy of protein structure modeling.
“In the future, programs based on neural networks may even make it possible to “design” new proteins with specified properties, for example, for decomposing plastics,” Akasov noted.
It was previously reported that the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for work in the field of protein molecules.
