The Guardian: a simple fixator has been created to fuse injured arms and legs
British scientists from Imperial College London have developed instructions for creating braces for injured limbs from available materials. Such devices could prevent the loss of an arm or leg due to injury in a natural disaster or war, The Guardian newspaper reports.
According to the inventors, they wanted to design a guide that would allow the production of medical devices from the most affordable materials using conventional equipment.
Experts have created a structure that holds the crushed bone together, giving the wounds a chance to heal and save the limb. To make it, you need several stainless steel rods and a certain amount of aluminum.
The researchers noted that the fixator is attached to the bone using pins while remaining external to reduce the risk of infection.
The scientists also created a toolkit for making the retainers. Their invention is being tested in Kenya and Rwanda to improve the technology.
