ENT Marnova: you can eat ice cream if you have a sore throat

Ice cream does not cause a sore throat and may even relieve it. Therefore, doctors are not against eating cold food for a sore throat if it helps the patient, Svetlana Marnova, an otolaryngologist at the Fomin Clinic network, told Gazeta.Ru.

“Ice cream itself does not cause a sore throat; it is caused by viruses and bacteria. Eating ice cream when you're sick won't cure the infection, but research shows ice cream can reduce pain. Most trials were of low quality and were carried out on a small sample of people, but in general doctors are not against ice cream for a sore throat. At the same time, some will feel better from ice cream, and for others from tea with honey, you need to focus on your feelings,” said Marnova.

The doctor added that ice cream after tonsil removal (tonsillectomy) does not improve the outcome of the operation. In the Soviet Union, children were often given ice cream after this operation to reduce the risk of bleeding. However, a recent study found that ice cream had no effect on pain levels or the risk of bleeding from a surgical wound.
