PNRPU: facial implants with 2-3 mm cells accelerate tissue regeneration three times

Scientists from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have found out which jaw implants take root in the body faster. Gazeta.Ru was informed about this by the press service of the scientific institution.

Maxillofacial defects that occur due to cysts, fractures and cancer require prosthetics. For this purpose, facial implants with a cellular structure are used, which promotes accelerated growth of bone tissue through empty cells. The diameter of the cells in the lattice varies, and the rate of healing and strength of the prosthesis depend on it.

Using 3D printing, specialists produced three types of implants with cell diameters of 1, 2 and 3 mm. Then the dentures were installed in rats and guinea pigs with defects of the lower jaw.

“The results of the study demonstrate that the processes of tissue formation inside the implant begin within 2 weeks after implantation, and the active phase begins at 4-9 months. The formation of new tissue occurs faster in cells that have increased dimensions of 2-3 mm – so the rate of engraftment of the prosthesis is reduced by three times (compared to a cell diameter of 1 mm),” noted Associate Professor of the Department of Innovative Mechanical Engineering Technologies, leading researcher Polina Kilina, employee of the laboratory of biofluids of PNRPU.

According to scientists, the conclusions of the scientific work will allow us to move on to clinical trials of the technology in humans.
