Doctor Cherepanova: no need to take tests for sex hormones without symptoms
Useless examinations at the gynecologist include tests for flora without symptoms, tests for hormones and testing for sexually transmitted infections. All tests require indications, Olga Cherepanova, a gynecologist at the Fomina Clinic network in Perm, told Gazeta.Ru.
“Getting tested for everything is a waste of money. Flora analysis for prevention is considered useless. Without symptoms, it is only needed before surgical procedures and during pregnancy. There is also no point in testing for sexually transmitted infections if you have no symptoms and have not changed sexual partners,” said the doctor.
Hormone tests are also not needed for prevention without the advice of a doctor. They can be prescribed, for example, for menstrual irregularities.
“Tests are carried out to identify the presence of pathology or to refute suspicions. It's not worth giving them away just like that. Test results can cause unnecessary anxiety, unreasonable further examinations, and sometimes treatment that is not necessary,” concluded Cherepanova.
