MIPT has developed a program to help recover from injuries and surgeries

Scientists from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) presented a software package for high-quality medical rehabilitation at home. Specialized applications are able to record the patient’s movements, recognize errors in exercises and correct them, the press service of the scientific institution told Gazeta.Ru.

According to WHO statistics, about 2.4 billion people in the world need rehabilitation. We are talking not only about recovery from injuries or operations, but also help with chronic diseases and age-related changes.

Developers from MIPT have provided the following scenario for using the online medical rehabilitation system.

The patient installs the application on his computer/phone and creates his account. After that, he selects his rehabilitation doctor from the list of specialists. After confirming the identity, access to the list of exercises that the doctor individually prescribed for rehabilitation, taking into account the characteristics of this clinical case, opens. The patient begins to perform them, and the system corrects him in real time, reporting errors. The training data and the resulting statistics are visible to both the patient and his doctor.

“The system monitors the functionality of the load by control points in comparison with the reference execution of the exercise. At the same time, if we are talking about restoring the range of motion, then the system will take into account the patient’s progress (for example, a gradual increase in the depth of the squat in the exercise). The system broadcasts the video data stream to the server, where it is processed and feedback is generated on the correctness of execution, which is sent back to the patient,” said Andrey Berezovsky, the project manager for creating a remote rehabilitation system, master’s student at the Federal Medical University of Physics and Technology, MIPT.

According to MIPT specialists, a prototype of the new rehabilitation system will be prepared for testing in the next six months.
