Doctor Pronina: lack of vitamin D is accompanied by frequent urination

Vitamin D regulates the body's absorption of calcium and phosphorus. With a lack of vitamin D, phosphorus-calcium metabolism is disrupted, and this is accompanied by symptoms such as weakness, painful sensations in the bones, cramps, unusually frequent urination and increased sweating. Daria Pronina, an endocrinologist at the medical company SberZdorovye, told Gazeta.Ru about this.

A lack of vitamin D can cause disturbances in phosphorus-calcium metabolism, which can lead to the development of certain pathologies. For example, among the consequences for adults, one can note osteomalacia, a process of softening of bones in which the formation of new bone tissue and its mineralization are impaired.

“Frequent urination in conditions of severe disturbance of phosphorus-calcium metabolism in the context of vitamin D deficiency can occur due to the development of an overactive bladder when its pathologies are not associated with the urinary system. The bladder muscle contracts involuntarily and prematurely, causing a frequent and sudden urge to urinate. This, in turn, may be due to a lack of calcium that has developed against the background of a lack of vitamin D, which is involved in the contraction of muscle tissue,” said the SberHealth doctor.

Also, a violation of phosphorus-calcium metabolism can lead to the development of cardiovascular pathologies, for example, hypertension and coronary heart disease, or to heart rhythm disturbances

“If the described symptoms occur, you should contact an endocrinologist to avoid complications. The diagnosis is established on the basis of symptoms, general examination and laboratory results: a biochemical blood test to determine the level of calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, as well as a urine test for calcium, phosphorus and creatinine. According to indications, the doctor may additionally prescribe an X-ray of the patient’s bones, for example, the pelvis, as well as densitometry – an X-ray examination that allows one to determine the density of bone tissue,” the specialist noted.

Treatment of phosphorus-calcium disorders is carried out comprehensively, both with the help of drugs and non-drug methods. According to indications, the doctor prescribes medications with vitamin D, phosphorus and calcium to the patient.
