Reuters: Social network X paid $5 million fine in Brazil to resume work

Social network X (formerly Twitter), owned by Elon Musk, has paid fines in Brazil and intends to seek permission to resume operations in the country, £Reuters reports citing documents.

According to the agency, on September 26, the company decided to comply with the authorities’ demands and asked the court to lift the ban on work in the republic. However, Supreme Court Judge Alexandri Di Morais ruled that X must first pay more than $5 million in fines.

Payments totaling 28.6 million reais ($5.24 million) have already been made and “duly proven,” according to a document filed by the US company’s lawyers.

“X Brasil requests that the platform be unblocked for free access by its users on national territory,” Reuters quotes the text of their statement.

On August 17, it became known that the social network X announced an urgent cessation of its work in Brazil. This decision was the result of a conflict with the judges of the country's Supreme Court regarding issues of censorship. On August 29, Judge Alexandri di Morais issued a subpoena to Musk, ordering him to appoint a new legal representative of the platform in the country within 24 hours. However, Chapter X refused to comply with these demands, after which on August 30, the Brazilian Supreme Court ordered the immediate shutdown of the social network in the country. In early September, mass protests took place in the republic after the closure of X
