Digital Foundry: The Last of Us Part II runs at 60 FPS on PlayStation 5 Pro

Digital Foundry's Oliver McKenzie tested the PS5 Pro version of The Last of Us Part II, assessing the visual enhancements, PSSR technology, and performance. The DTF portal reports this.

Thus, the game offers three graphic modes on the improved console. “Pro” mode renders the picture in 1440p resolution with upscaling to 4K using PSSR. In the “Performance” mode, rendering occurs in 1440p with scaling to 4K, and in the “Quality” mode, the picture is initially rendered in 4K resolution. The first two modes offer smoother images at 60 frames per second, while the latter offers 30 FPS.

In “Pro” mode, PS5 Pro provides better image quality compared to “Performance” mode. The game looks more detailed and clear, eliminating the blurry effect seen on the base PS5. The improvements are especially noticeable in vegetation. The expert also noted that on the PlayStation 5 Pro the image is more stable, producing fewer scaling artifacts and flickering, which is due to the effectiveness of the PSSR upscaler.

However, the difference in graphics can only be seen upon closer examination. McKenzie noted that small differences in graphics between the Pro and Quality modes are often only noticeable when zooming in. When playing the game at a normal distance from the screen, the differences are not noticeable. The Last of Us Part II on PS5 Pro runs at a stable 60 FPS without drops, with the exception of a short-term frametime decrease of 16 ms when switching angles in cutscenes, which is due to frame smoothing.
