CNN: Yacht sunken off Sicily may contain sensitive intelligence
The superyacht Bayesian, which sank off the coast of Sicily, likely contains watertight safes containing “sensitive intelligence information” that could be of interest to foreign governments, CNN reports.
Specialist divers working at the wreck site have asked for increased security around the sunken vessel, the channel's sources said. According to them, Italian prosecutors believe the yacht contains “highly sensitive data linked to Western intelligence services.”
The ship's owner, British multimillionaire Mike Lynch, who died in the crash, had ties to British and American intelligence agencies through his own companies, including cybersecurity firm Darktrace, the report notes. That company was sold to Chicago-based private equity firm Thoma Bravo in April. Lynch also served as a former adviser to British Prime Ministers David Cameron and Theresa May on science, technology and cybersecurity.
As the American channel's sources note, the ship allegedly contained “waterproof safes containing two highly encrypted hard drives” that contain “highly classified information, including passwords and other confidential data.”
The yacht Bayesian sank on August 19 off the coast of Sicily. Among the dead was British millionaire Mike Lynch, and his 18-year-old daughter also died.
