Marxist MP Dissanayake wins Sri Lankan presidential election
Marxist MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake has won the presidential elections in Sri Lanka.
Associated Press reports this with reference to the country’s Central Election Commission.
“Dissanayake, whose campaign for the working class and anti-political elite has made him popular with the youth, defeated opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and the incumbent Liberal president Ranil Wickramasinghe,” the agency notes.
Incumbent President Ranil Wickramasinghe congratulated Dissanayake on his victory and expressed hope that he would continue efforts to rebuild the country's economy.
Earlier it was reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats were ahead of the Alternative for Germany party in the Brandenburg elections by a small margin.
