More than 1,000 Samsung workers strike in India for third week

The strike of more than 1,000 workers at the Samsung India Electronics plant is continuing for the third week.

A union representative said negotiations with management had reached a dead end.

The workers are demanding recognition of their union and a 25-30% wage increase, with the average monthly salary at 30,000-35,000 rupees ($425).

The strike by workers at the plant near Chennai, the capital of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, began on September 9.

According to the union, up to 70% of production has been suspended at the plant, which produces televisions, refrigerators and washing machines.
