AP: US will begin withdrawing troops from bases in Iraq after presidential elections
The US will begin withdrawing troops from some military bases in Iraq after the presidential elections in November.
Associated Press reports.
“After the November elections, US troops will begin to withdraw from Ain al-Asad airbase in western Iraq and from Baghdad International Airport,” the agency said, citing an Iraqi government source.
It is noted that part of the armed forces will move to the Harir base in Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan.
“The troop withdrawal is because a significant part of the political community in Baghdad does not want American troops on Iraqi soil,” Charles Lister, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute think tank in Washington, told the agency.
According to the Associated Press, there are currently about 2,500 American troops in Iraq.
Earlier, the United States announced the end of the international mission in Iraq.
