MFA: Russia may appeal to the International Court of Justice in the Nord Stream case
Russia has officially filed pre-trial claims due to the Nord Stream explosions to a number of states; other countries potentially involved in the explosions are next in line; if the result is negative, the Russian Federation may appeal to the International Court of Justice. Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated this in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“If the issue is not resolved at this stage (at the stage of pre-trial claims. – Editor’s note), then the Russian Federation intends to take the case to the judicial level and appeal to the International Court of Justice,” she emphasized.
As the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted, Moscow officially filed pre-trial claims against Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland in connection with the explosions at Nord Stream. The claims were made on the basis of international instruments: the International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings of 1997 and the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism of 1999.
Prior to this, Bundestag deputy Sarah Wagenknecht called for demanding compensation from Ukraine if the investigation confirms that Kyiv is behind the sabotage of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.
Explosions at the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines occurred on September 26, 2022. Germany, Denmark and Sweden suggested that this could be deliberate sabotage. Nord Stream AG, the operator of the Nord Stream, reported that the damage to the gas pipelines is extensive and the time frame for repairs is impossible to estimate. The Russian Prosecutor General's Office initiated a case regarding an act of international terrorism.
On September 26 of this year, the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of the Russian Federation stated that the version of the Western media about the Ukrainian trace in the explosions of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines does not stand up to criticism. The SVR believes that the United States and Great Britain launched a disinformation campaign, trying to hide the true goals of sabotage, as well as its organizers.
