For more than 240 years, the bald eagle has been a symbol of the United States’ power and strength.
President Joe Biden signed a law officially naming the bald eagle the national bird of the United States, fixing an oversight that had been unnoticed for years. The bald eagle, known for its white head, yellow beak, and brown body, has long been a symbol of the nation.
The bald eagle has been featured on the Great Seal of the United States since 1782. The seal includes the eagle, an olive branch, arrows, a shield, the motto “E Pluribus Unum,” and a group of stars. That same year, Congress chose the bald eagle as the national emblem, and its image has been widely used on official documents, the presidential flag, military symbols, and U.S. currency.
However, despite its iconic status, the bald eagle was never officially named the national bird-people just assumed it was. Now, the new law makes it official.
The bald eagle is indigenous to North America.
